Rideau Canal Skating

Ottawa's Rideau Canal is the world's longest outdoor skating rink and it opened this weekend. A couple of friends of mine and I went on to skate the whole length. Ice conditions were excellent albeit it was a bit cold. We cruised from Dow's lake to NAC and back and it took us just an hour.

I enjoy skating on the canal and, to be relevant, view it as cross training for skate skiing. Will aim to improve speed this year.

Nordic skating is sometimes called skate touring. It shares boots and bindings with skate skiing. The blades can be easily detached in case the person needs to walk over a patch of rough ice or to the car. It's popular in Scandinavian countries. They're perfect for the canal. Local stores Fresh Air Experience and PaddleShack carry Nordic blades.
