Spring Skiing under the Sun

Conditions were much better than expected. Yang and I skated up to Champlain Lookout and then to Western Cabin. Snow was soft everywhere except in shades. Ridge road past Champlain Lookout was not groomed last night so it was a bit crusty. View at Western was incredible. The snow had softened up on our way back to Huron to meet up with Tina and Charlene.

After a break outside Huron Cabin, we started our way back to P10. Yang and I went to check out Black Lake since I've never visited it in winter. Downhill was really fun but uphill was tough slogging. Snow really softened up by then. Luckily, it was mostly downhill from there and we reached P10 in no time.

Sunny and good snow are the best combination. Lots of people were out enjoying both. We even saw a lot of people skiing in shorts.  A perfect day for me.

O'Brien to Healey

Two WWII movie names would be the best to describe this trip: “The longest day" and "A bridge too far"

Jack, Yang, James and I, 4 guys formed up a team to start from P11 O'brien Parking Lot at around 11:30am to venture through the beautiful trail No.36 which was about 12 KM back and forth.  This trail was scenic but with some challenge on a few winding steep slopes. When I was a beginner for XC ski, Jack once brought me here just for fun. It for sure was for him, but not for me. I couldn't remember how many times of kissing the snowy ground on the slopes. I didn't even finished 1/3 and quit.

Weather was good, clear with some clouds. Snow was a little sticky which made our paces a little stagnant. But guess it also helped giving extra resistance for braking down from the slope. Jack and Yang are veterans who always led the way. James and I always stayed cautious so we fell behind, but with continuous encouragement from the veterans to cheer us up. James was a newbie who only started XC ski this winter, and surprisingly he handled well.

Jack's poor memory gave us a false hope that we would be having lunch sitting on a bench beside the trail in the middle way of trail 36. But it never appeared. When we almost reached the end, Jack just realized that we could have missed the bench. But actually it was just about 150 metres in cul-de-sac trail from the crossing of discovery trail and trail 36. We did find the bench and enjoyed the snow and ice covered Meech Lake on that bench eventually but that was on the way back. This time when we were at the end of the trail 36, we had a more challenging idea, going further to Shelter Healey which was another 5 KM stretch. For Jack and Yang, it was a piece of cake because these two have done even longer distance. But for me, my historical longest was probably 12 KM. If we kept going, it would make our trip to be about 22-23KM, almost double. But who said we couldn't?  Let's go, all of us finally voted for yea unanimously.

We changed our luncheon venue from the bench to Healey. Trail 50 to Healey was my acquaintance so that I knew it was not too rough. But the plummeting temperature, the strong wind and our dropping strength still made it rougher than I expected.  At around 2pm, we finally reached Healey, we mangered our lunch like "wind blowing away the clouds".  Our energy got somewhat refilled after the 20 min or so lunch break. Even though, it took us more time to return to where we started. I remembered that there was a bridge and a long slope just ahead of the finish line. In the last route of trail 36, I always expected to see the bridge where I could rest a little. But it seemed to be so far to me and all I saw was endless trails in the woods. My shoulders, arms and legs were so sore that I was slowing down a lot. Fortunately, my trip was not lonely that I had a Francophone family of 4, parents and 2 little daughters, skiing not far from me. They did the exact same route like we did as we chatted in Healey. So my self-esteem supported me hanging there not to be exceeded by the little ones.  At around 4:30pm, when I lunged down from a steep slope, I saw the bridge.
I gave myself a break there and another 15min later, I saw the other 3 at the Parking Lot.

Yes, I made it! Mon Dieu! I was too excited and exhausted.

Some more pictures were posted in my album.

Thanks Jack, Yang and James for the buddy support and company for accomplish this 5-hour journey.

mer bleue, off at P22

Grace, Michael, and I skied #53&53A (the shorter loop as compared to #50/51/52)at mer bleue this afternoon.  the trails are built on a unique sub-arctic landscape.  we took the loop clockwise: off at P22, crossed two wood bridges (the melting snow uncovered the bridges). hit P21 and Ridge Road after approx. 3.5k. had to take off ski to walk to the other side of Ridge Road (about 30m, clicked ski back on, skied for another 3.4k, and returned to P22, our starting point.

A nice touring: at one point, a train koo-koo-choo-choo-ing by; at another point of time, a puppy tagging along….

The snow was wet as expected, but not bad at all at this time of the season.  not sure if we would have a chance to check out the longer loop before snow totally melting away.

To Healey and back

Alan, James, Yang and I had a great ski today. Planned to reach the bench on the Meech lake and have lunch there. I, however, got disoriented and forgot where it was. :-) Anyhow, we charged on and reached Healey and had lunch there. On the way back, I, of course, recalled where the bench was and we visited it. It was indeed a lovely spot.

Snow was pretty nice and soft. We even ventured off the trail to visit the Wilson Ruin. Beautiful place to have a chemical plant there. :-)

Here are a few pictures.

Trips for the weekend of March 23/24

So the plan this Saturday is to ski #36 from P11, which is a blue run. It's a fun run with some steep stretches but it's not dangerous. If you can control your speed by snowplowing, you can ski #36. With fresh new snow, it should be quite enjoyable.

Will again meet at Ikea at 10:30am on Saturday in the yellow A lot.

XY and Michael plan to ski somewhere else. Here I quote:
"plan to check out one route called “mere bleue” to the east end near my place. it's part of the Greenbelt i believe, one of City's conservation areas. welcome to join us this sun., starting at 2pm."

Let her know if you'd like to join her. She scheduled this for Sunday

For more information on #36, check out http://xcskiing.ca/p11-to-trail-50/

I quote this paragraph for beginners who have improved.

"Since trail # 36 is only for classic cross-country skiing, it is narrower than the average green trail. It has lot of hills, but most do not have excessive curves or turns, meaning it is possible to maintain a fair degree of control when descending (assuming the conditions aren't too icy). Some hills can be a little challenging, but there is plenty of place to reduce speed by snow plowing. In this context, trail # 36 might be a good choice for someone who has mastered some of the more difficult green trails, and wants to try a blue trail."

P6 to Pink Lake Mar 9

There will be enough snow for April skiing. Five of us Charlene, Johne, JF, Tina and me started from P6 and had quick lunch at Pink lake. Johne and Tina went down pink Lake and climb back.  The recent warm weather made the classic tracks slow, it was still a great day in the park.

Return to Stony Swamp

Thanks to another big snow dump, we decided to return to Stony Swamp.
We got to P11 as before but took the opposite direction this time. Total a stretch of 4.5km of trail 26 and everyone took it at ease, to have time chit chat. I was, as usual, taking it easy and following the group with some distance.

That little hill where we practice downhill each time and have fun, was nicely blanked with thick snow. Everyone was running up and down a few times and the laugh can be heard from a distance...

Girls like to have a group pose together: Jingle, Charlene, Yanping, Michelle, Jean.

James 甲 and James 乙 added:

Thanks to Michelle who had these nice pictures taken with her iphone. When it comes to the phone camera, everyone should be a 果粉。

Shilly Shally

Took at Shilly Shally cabin on March 3rd.

XC to Shilly Shally

Yang and I planned to do a little back country skiing via #12 to Shilly Shally since we had a lot of new snow this past week.

Not long before we were to start, Johne and Lauren told me that they'd come. Knowing Johne only skates, Yang and I brought our skate skis as well. Turns out the trails were in perfect conditions for skating. This is the first time we had more than 2 skaters. Climbing was tough as usual but we all had a blast. Yang and Lauren got to Huron lookout. I was very impressed. It took me a long while before I even dared to try climbing Fortune parkway.

Roger and Grace lead with ease all the way. Grace was having a really good time despite her ankle problem. After lunch at Shilly Shally, they climbed up Khyber pass and went to visit Huron cabin and lookout before catching up with us.

March 2 Ski and Toboganning at Mooney's Bay

It was a last minute decision (actually last day as it was decided yesterday) to do some xc practice at Mooney's Bay today with SMM. Little Pascal is only 5 (or 4?). You will be amazed to see him putting on the skis and gliding along!

Finding it hard to resist the happy, loud laughes, I threw my skis aside and joined the tobogganing with the kids and those who are young in heart.
